The New You "A Process"
I was having a conversation the other day, and the person said to me "being a Christian is so hard". She was speaking of all the ways that she felt she needed to change in order to live the Christian life. I assured her that as she rendered her life over to the Lord that He would evoke His desires upon her life. Our God is a "Change Agent" who operates inwardly to produce outward evidence of a New You. Thank you Jesus!
Paul describes the 3-stage process of transformation into a "new self" in book of Ephesians
- Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness - Eph 4:22-24
The three stages are: (1) putting off the old self, which belongs to the former way of life; (2) be renewed in the attitude of one's mind; and (3) putting on the new self.
The words "put off" and "put on" in (1) and (3) are past tense in the Greek, indicating a completed action (it's already done). The words "be renewed" in (2) is present tense, indicating a continuing development of spiritual attitude (an ongoing process).
In the process, the former self, which satisfied it's human desires in what ever ways it's wanted, is now put away -- Col 3:8, stripped off like filthy clothes and brought under submission. Becoming a new person in Christ begins with the transformation of the mind. "Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" -- Romans 12:2.
Although the decision to become a Christian may be instantaneously made, the transformation of a sinful human body into one that exemplifies righteousness and holiness, requires a lifetime of determination and discipline (Eph 4:22-5:21). The "New You" is a work in progress, and the Spirit of God which now lives in you is the "Change Agent" who makes it so and assuring.
God has an answer for the diluted soul, the bible says that the Spirit of God "helps us in our weakness" (Rom 8:26). You are a work in progress, a masterpiece on the Potter's wheel and He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Amen.
